Sparks’ Cameron Brink reveals Stephen Curry factor in Stanford move

There were a lot of college basketball programs interested in bringing Cameron Brink in after high school. She was rapidly growing and her skill set was unmatched for her age group. There were a lot of factors that were considered before she chose Stanford. The biggest one out of all was his closeness to Stephen Curry. So, what did the Golden State Warriors legend possess that made the now Los Angeles Sparks rookie join the Cardinal?

Stanford’s proximity to the Warriors

Some college athletes choose their dream school out of prestige or the benefits that come with it. Any person in the country, specifically the West Coast, would also drool at the prospect of going to Stanford. But, this was not the Cardinal’s ultimate pull on Cameron Brink. It was the fact that the Warriors and Stephen Curry played so close to the campus, via Podcast P with Paul George Presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment.

“I would also say because Stephen Curry being so close to Stanford, it was just really nice to know I had family nearby. And then also you just never know. Life’s uncertain as a women’s basketball player, as a basketball player in general. So you just want to get a good degree. If it doesn’t work out, you can go work. That sounds terrible,” the Sparks rookie said.

The Warriors’ star guard is Cameron Brink’s god-brother. Both of them grew up to be in love with the game and eventually, it would be Stephen Curry teaching her the ways of the game. She has been there at every step of the way for the Curry family and the same can be said the other way around.

How did these two families get so close? Well, Dell Curry and Brink’s dad were teammates at Virginia Tech. The two got so close and eventually became roommates. As both of them started to have families, basketball became a big part of how they show love to their kids. That care through the game is starting to pay dividends for both of them.

It wasn’t always rainbows and butterflies for Brink. She did start off with a national championship run with Stanford but everything was difficult from then on. The Cardinal would find it hard to make it back to the natty due to the rise of South Carolina, LSU, and Iowa. Nonetheless, there was one big lesson imparted to her by Curry that stuck around.

“I think the one thing he’s taught me to just bring joy to everything, which I think we all know he just does a great job. You always see him smiling, he’s laughing, he’s joking. Life’s just a joy when you’re around him. So, I think I’ve really learned that it’s a job, but it’s a privilege to do this for a living. So just keep bringing light to every space you’re in, and I think he’s really taught me that,” she declared.

That philosophy has helped the Sparks rookie quite a lot. She carried it during their run at the national title, her three Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors, and throughout her other accolades. Hopefully, it will do the same during her years in the WNBA.
