Time traveling to look at the Detroit Lions offensive line of the future
Junfu Han-USA TODAY Sports

What a 2024 NFL Draft it was for the Detroit Lions. The big thing that everyone wants to rightly focus on right now is what the Lions did with the secondary. They completely re-designed the entire room from the ground up.

The big takeaway for me after a couple of days of reflecting is that the Lions may have their entire offensive line of the future on their bench right now.

It has made me think a lot. So much that what I want to do is load the flux capacitor up with some plutonium and head to the not too distant future to look at what I believe could be this team's future offensive line. Let's break it down piece by piece.

Right tackle: Penei Sewell

First there's the obvious crown jewel of this unit. He's that now and he'll be that in the future as well since Sewell is just 23-years-old and is now the highest paid lineman in the game.

His play will continue to be great, but it's his leadership that he's already brought as such a young player that will continue to sustain this offensive line and their growth.

Right Guard: Giovanni Manu

It was expected that Manu would come in and play tackle at 6-foot-7 and 352 pounds. It turns out the Lions have him penciled in at right guard at the moment.

The thought of having these two very large and athletic guys next to each other on the right side has to make Jahmyr Gibbs salivate a little. He's going to be able to run through some gaping holes with these two.

Manu is going to take some time, but it shouldn't be a lot. He's had solid coaching and will continue to have more once he gets to work with Hank Fraley. There's a possibility that he's the starting right guard as early as 2025.

Center: Kingsley Eguakun

Walk with me here. I know that he's an undrafted free agent and that the chances here a bit slim, but what I see when I look at Eguakun is a guy that should have been a sixth or seventh round draft pick, but missing time in 2023 kept that from happening.

What I also see is that he allowed just one sack in three seasons as a starter in the SEC and with time under the learning tree, he could possibly be a starting center in this league. Time is the key word to focus on here. It's not going to be right away.

The good thing is that he's young. He just turned 23-years-old in March.

Left Guard: Christian Mahogany

What happened? Seriously, how did this guy that was mocked as high as the third round in the NFL Draft not get picked until the sixth-round? When we asked Brad Holmes about it on Saturday, even he couldn't believe it.

Mahogany has spent the duration of his playing time in the right guard spot, but he'll be asked to move over to the left side in this situation. Again, the Lions are granted time to make this work. Don't think that he has to do this right away or even in 2025. Graham Glasgow is going to be here for a while.

Mahogany is a solid player that's good at his job. He hasn't allowed a sack since 2021. He hasn't allowed a quarterback hit since then either.

Left Tackle: Colby Sorsdal

Here's what we learned about Sorsdal in his rookie year. There's potential there, but he's not a guard. It's time to move him back to the tackle spot where he played for five years at William & Mary. Just one little change, he's going to have to learn how to play on the left side instead of the right side. It's not that hard. Tell him Wash.

Ok, it's going to take some time to make that move. But again, we're not talking about anything that needs to happen right away. Taylor Decker is more than likely going to be brought back after the 2024 season and Sorsdal will continue to have time to learn.

We'll come back to this in a few years and see how right or wrong it is. My guess is if this happens, we're looking at the 2026 season.
